  WEEE Registration in
Croatia

European Union's WEEE Directive 2002/96/EC on Waste of Electronic and Electrical Equipment requires that, the WEEE symbol must be placed on an EEE product if the product falls in one of the 10 categories and is placed onto the EU market after the 13th August 2005. Producers must provide refurbishment, treatment and reuse information for each "new" WEEE. The directive obligates member states to establish and maintain a registry of producers putting electrical and electronic equipment onto the market. So far, there does not exist a centralized European registration office. Producers must register in individual member states of the EEA.

Croatian Waste Management System

Inadequate waste management is the major environmental problem in Croatia, therefore construction and development of an integrated waste management system is a top priority.

There is legislation in force in Croatia governing most aspects of waste management system; however, it is not in harmony with the EU requirements and standards. An even more serious problem is failure to enforce the regulations. Data on waste quantities and streams are neither complete nor reliable, and control is not adequate. Situation is particularly poor with infrastructure – the number of facilities for acceptance, treatment and disposal of waste is insufficient, and the existing waste treatment capacities are not used in a satisfactory manner.

A special problem is siting of the waste management facilities. General public education and awareness raising processes have not been adequately promoted and implemented.
