European Union's WEEE Directive 2002/96/EC on Waste of Electronic and Electrical Equipment requires that, the WEEE symbol must be placed on an EEE product if the product falls in one of the 10 categories and is placed onto the EU market after the 13th August 2005. Producers must provide refurbishment, treatment and reuse information for each "new" WEEE. The directive obligates member states to establish and maintain a registry of producers putting electrical and electronic equipment onto the market. So far, there does not exist a centralized European registration office. Producers must register in individual member states of the EEA.

Registration for the producer

The national authority covering producer responsibility is the Pirkanmaa Regional Environment Centre.

All producers must be registered on the producer data register maintained by the Pirkanmaa Environment Centre. Producers must have a Finnish company registration code (Y-code). Registration forms are available in Finnish, Swedish and English. However, the registration must be done by using the forms in Finnish or Swedish, the English versions are for information only.

Timing of implementation:

Government Decree 852/2004 on WEEE came into force on 13 August 2005.

Amended Waste Act (452/2004) came into force on 1 Sept 2004.

National legislation:

Government Decree 852/2004 on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment.
Came into force on 13 August 2005, obliging the manufacturers or commercial importers of equipment to take responsibility for waste management related to electronic and electrical equipment, to promote the reuse of discarded equipment, and to organise the collection, recovery, and other suitable disposal of equipment, also taking responsibility for the costs thus incurred.

Amended Waste Act (452/2004).
Came into force on 1 Sept 2004, defining the products and producers covered by producer responsibility, and setting out the producers' responsibilities regarding the organisation of waste management.
